About Republic Day

Republic Day is a national public holiday in India celebrated every year on 26 January to mark the day the Constitution of India came into effect in 1950. The occasion signifies the country's transition into a sovereign democratic republic governed by its own constitutional framework.

History

India achieved independence from British colonial rule on 15 August 1947, but initially operated under the modified Government of India Act 1935 as a constitutional dominion. A Constituent Assembly presided over by Dr Rajendra Prasad, with a Drafting Committee chaired by Dr B.R. Ambedkar, was tasked with drafting a permanent constitution for the young nation. After nearly three years of thorough debates and revisions, the Constituent Assembly formally adopted the completed document on 26 November 1949.

To honour a pivotal milestone in the freedom movement, the assembly selected 26 January 1950 for the Constitution to officially take effect. Exactly twenty years earlier, on 26 January 1930, the Indian National Congress had declared Purna Swaraj (Complete Self-Rule) at its Lahore session, rejecting colonial dominion status. The enactment of the Constitution on this date established the Republic of India and replaced the remaining colonial governance structure with an elected President as the head of state.

Traditions & Celebrations

The central national celebration takes place along Kartavya Path in New Delhi, where the President of India unfurls the national flag, followed by the national anthem and a 21-gun salute. A grand ceremonial parade showcases India's defense capabilities, regiment marching contingents, and vibrant cultural tableaux representing different states and union territories, ending with a flypast by the Indian Air Force. Across the country, schools, local government offices, residential societies, and institutions host flag unfurling ceremonies, patriotic cultural programmes, and sweet distributions. Celebrations officially conclude on the evening of 29 January with the traditional Beating Retreat ceremony at Vijay Chowk.

  • The original copies of the Constitution of India were handwritten in Hindi and English by calligrapher Prem Behari Narain Raizada, decorated with artwork from Shantiniketan artists.
  • Unlike Independence Day when the Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort, the President of India unfurls the flag on Republic Day because the President is the constitutional head of state.
  • 26 January was specifically chosen for Republic Day because on that date in 1930, the Indian National Congress proclaimed Purna Swaraj, or complete independence.
  • Official Republic Day festivities in the capital span four days, concluding on 29 January with the historic Beating Retreat ceremony performed by military and police bands.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between Republic Day and Independence Day in India?

Independence Day (15 August) commemorates India's freedom from British rule in 1947, whereas Republic Day (26 January) celebrates the enforcement of the Constitution of India in 1950, establishing India as a republic.

Who unfurls the national flag on Republic Day?

The President of India unfurls the national flag at Kartavya Path in New Delhi. In state capitals, the respective State Governors unfurl the flag.

Why is the flag 'unfurled' on Republic Day instead of 'hoisted'?

On Independence Day, the flag is pulled from the bottom to the top of the pole and hoisted to signify the rise of an independent nation. On Republic Day, the flag is already tied at the top of the pole and unfurled to signify the spread of a free constitutional republic.
